The doors project management opens
Why I think a project management degree is one of the most transferable things a construction professional can study.
Last year I wrote about wanting to step away from tech, and about the dream of one day running my own firm. A year on, I am still in tech, now studying for an MTech in Project Management, and I see more paths in front of me than I did then. A lot of that is down to what project management actually is: a way of thinking that works almost anywhere work gets done.
In construction
The obvious door is the one I trained for. Construction needs people who can hold cost, time, quality and risk in their head at the same time. With a quantity surveying background, project management turns cost expertise into something bigger: project manager, project controls, contract manager, cost manager on large programmes. Those are roles where you are not just pricing the job, you are steering it.
In tech
The less obvious door is the one I am already standing in. Software teams run on the same fundamentals: scope, schedules, dependencies, risk and people. I have been working through Jira and Confluence, the tools many tech teams use to plan and track work, and the ideas underneath them feel familiar. A backlog is a list of work packages. A sprint is a short programme. A release is a handover.
An engineer who can also plan, estimate and communicate is rare. In a startup, where everyone does a bit of everything, that combination counts for a lot.
In research and beyond
Project management is also a research field in its own right, and it is the lens for most of my academic work on how construction adopts new technology. It sits well with further study, consulting, and, one day, perhaps the firm I wrote about.
The common thread
What all these doors share is that project management is not tied to one industry. Buildings, software, events, research: they all have a start, an end, a budget and people who need to agree. Learn to manage that well and you are never only one thing.
